Car magazine has a clear title, and main images to clearly show what the magazine is about, also it has many sell lines/cover lines.

Conventions of front covers of various genres of magazines

The best magazine covers all have various features in common. Firstly they all have a clear title of the magazine weather its right across the top of the magazine like wire and pro-cycling, or just in the corner like Q. This makes sure the reader/customer knows what magazine their getting/ reading. Also they all have a main picture from an article as the background, this informs the reader what the magazine involves. Also to inform the reader their are various strap-lines and cover liners either in the left/right third or around the main in image. However the Q magazine on punk 76, I believe is very poor as it doesn’t show any information about the magazine except the main image and a sell line.

Example Of A Magazine : Total Film

The magazine has a clear masthead and the photo clearly shows that their is going to be an article on the upcoming X-Men film as the sell line clearly shows. At the bottom their are cover lines to entise you into getting it as you want to know if theirs going to be a pirates 4 or what other films are coming out.

Example Of A Magazine : Mounatain Biking UK

MBUK has a clear masthead and uses the left third well with cover lines. It has an excellent main image that shows you exactly what the magaxine is about. It also has a puff that stands out. With a sell line 'beat the fear' this is a very well published magazine.

Example Of A Magazine: Rolling Stone

The Rolling Stone magazine is all about the main image on the front as it clearly shows the guitarist SLASH from guns n' roses and shows it is a music magazine for a rock and roll lover. In the left third it states what other articles you may be intrested in such as an interview with kings of leon. As well as showing this is the top banner ' Led Zepplin / Eric Clapton / Carlos Santana.

Example Of A Magazine: Empire

Empire magazine has a prdominatly clear bold red masthead and has the main image of superman from the the man of steel film. It then has various cover lines advertising: Wolverine,Thor, Kick-Ass, Iron Man and the Lone Ranger. Furthermore their is a puff showing an article on David Lynch. The banner at the top tells you that their is alot of superhero films and sell line saying 'FIRST LOOK at Pegg & Frost At the worlds end.

What makes a strong photo?

Their are seven things that make a strong photo and they are:

• Line
• Shape
• Form
• Space
• Colour
• Value/tone
• Texture
• Pattern

Example 1 

This is a good photo as it is fully focused in the foreground to draw attention to the man and by using aperture priority they have the background purposefully blurred again focusing on the man, also they have got the correct shutter speed and light as the image isn’t too dark because a quick shutter and no lighting or to bright due to a long exposure.. Furthermore his look is eye catching and they haven’t made the image to complicated by adding unnecessary props. The person in the photo is facing directly at the camera and this means lines are more visible and easier to follow. So his moustache, hair band, the top of his glasses and also the line from shoulder to shoulder.

Example 2

This is a very poorly taken photograph as firstly it is very blurred this will be down to the person taking the image not being able to keep their hands still maybe because they are stretched too far out or they have only used one hand.  Also the lines in the photo the sand, sea and sky are all pointing down when actually they would be horizontal this means that the camera has been on an angle when the picture was taken so the person wasn’t concentrating about the image and its quality.  Furthermore the person in the background is completely out of focus and the rule of thirds hasn’t been used.
